Symbiosis 2023
While making this series I found inspiration in reconciling opposites: There was the smoothness of my stoneware/porcelain clay - lending itself to watery, delicate forms which are time consuming to refine, and finished with bright crystally glazes.
In contrast, I had my rough, iron-rich clay body harvested from Lake Superior, which brought out jagged shapes made with a faster, more aggressive process and raw, unglazed surfaces.
Mineral Fluid
Much like the ancient conversation between the undulating waves and the steadfast rocky shoreline, the opposing features of these clay bodies, when united, serve to enhance each other’s unique qualities. This work has reinforced the notion that embracing duality alters our perception, allowing us to transcend individualism and appreciate the beauty in symbiosis.
